Michael Wheeler, EVP of the NTT Communications Global IP Network, to Speak on Emerging Technologies and Company’s Role in Leading Change

New York, NY and Chicago, IL – May 11, 2015NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the global data and IP services arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom leader NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced its participation at the International Telecoms Week (ITW) 2015 taking place in Chicago, May 10-13. ITW is the annual meeting for the global wholesale telecommunications community, bringing together participants from around the world and providing the opportunity to learn and network with industry peers, suppliers and customers.

Michael Wheeler, executive vice president of NTT Communications Global IP Network at NTT America, will join industry leaders on the panel “Technological Innovation: A Step into the Future” on Wednesday, May 13th, at 9:00 a.m. The session will focus on the technological developments that have the potential to disrupt, compliment and challenge the global wholesale telecom industry. Michael Wheeler has 20 years of executive, sales management and operational experience in the Internet and communications industry. In his current role at NTT America, Wheeler is responsible for all financial, engineering, operational and customer relationship activities for the Global IP Network business unit.

“NTT Com is constantly testing and deploying innovative technologies to enable our customers to reach new markets around the world and improve their operations,” said Michael Wheeler. “Our company was one of the first global carriers to make 10G available as early as 2006. Today NTT Com is also a pioneer in 100G technology, as we have been offering 100G ports to customers for almost a year,” he added.

As well as launching new 100G-enabled PoPs and upgrading submarine assets to 100G speeds, NTT Com is also helping to innovate and develop a range of related new technologies such as IPv6, SDN and a number of green initiatives. SDN technology has been at the core of the company’s IP backbone for over a decade, resulting in a fully automated network operation with higher quality of service, lower error rates and extensive network visibility.

In 2014 the company revealed that its 100G interconnection service had achieved the world’s first long-distance transmission of 8K ultra-HD uncompressed video. Additionally, during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Global IP Network facilitated a low-latency connection between Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS), and the Japanese national team’s training camp in Brazil, some 20,000 km away.

NTT Com has gained industry recognition for its Tier-1 Global IP Network and transit wholesale offerings around the world. The company was named Best Global Wholesale Carrier (data) and Best North American Wholesale Carrier at the Global Carrier Awards 2014. NTT Com continues to rank as one of the leading global wholesale IP providers in the latest Dyn (formerly Renesys) Global Wholesale Rankings for the third year running. Its IP backbone covers North and South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania, and provides the best possible environment for data and video transport through a single autonomous system number (AS 2914).
